10/GUI CON10DER

edit regarding copyright info, per legal advice.

Having just discovered 10/GUI, I thought a little about this revolutionary idea and came up with an evolution of the idea… the CON10DER (Con-ten-der).

Read On!

CON10DER ALPHA

The CON10DER ALPHA is a notebook computer running  a modified Ubuntu kernel with the in-house+open-source 10/GUI X11 window manager. The notebook looks much like an ordinary netbook or notebook, (see Acer 1) until you open it up. Once open, the CON10DER ALPHA resembles a large Nintendo DS because of its two screens, the lower being an OLED multi-touch screen. This “DS+ACER” combo gets better. The bottom screen, not only multi-touch, also has a tactile feedback/pre-feedback (I’ll explain later) mechanism embedded within.

You may have noticed that when describing the CON10DER ALPHA, I did not mention an included keyboard. Well, the CON10DER doesn’t have a keyboard, as such. The CON10DER’s bottom touchscreen replaces it.

If you haven’t checked out 10gui.com’s video, you should do so. I’ll wait.

Ah. you’re back.

If you see the end of the video, it shows a 3d model of a hypothetical 10/GUI desktop, with a keyboard+trackpad-like device.

Instead of this, the CON10DER ALPHA uses the upper half of the touchpad as a keyboard when needed, using the “pre-feedback” mechanism I mentioned earlier. The OLED screen displays the letters and the tactile pre-feedback mechanism provides actual, physical buttons that disappear when an application does not require them.

Because of this, the  CON10DER ALPHA can function much like the “Optimus Maximus” keyboard that retails at about 2000 American dollars, changing it’s keyboard as necessary depending on required function. This mechanism also doubles the touchpad area.

BUT WAIT! There’s MORE!

The CON10DER ALPHA doesn’t just close like a laptop, it also has a near 360 degree rotatable spine, so it is also usable as an ebook. In addition to the raised touchscreen, the laptop is extremely easy to control, and is viewable in its entirety without being obscured.

But the CON10DER ALPHA isn’t just a hardware innovation, it’s also a software innovation as well.  Running the 10/GUI window manager on a modified Ubuntu Kernel with open-source drivers, the CON10DER is fast, sleek, and robust. A unified, sleek, and informative user interface is given to the user, right up to a graphically-pleasing modified GRUB bootup.

The 10/GUI window manager includes many other features, including a “dashboard”-like overlay system viewable at any point anywhere, including games, with an X-Fire -like chat system built in. The 10/GUI happiness doesn’t stop there, though. Every single application that is included on the CON10DER notebook has been visually reskinned and back-end reconfigured to better support the touch screen & multi-touch capabilities. Imagine flick-scrolling Firefox, collaborative editing in Audacity, pinch-zooming in GIMP, and more. A large library of applications that have been modified/created specifically for the 10/GUI UI is preinstalled in the Ubuntu Add/Remove Programs application.

The CON10DER also aims to be the fastest notebook it can be. The sleek, ultra-fast 10/GUI window manager runs on a sleek and ultra-fast kernel of Linux- Ubuntu. This notebook… is revolutionary.
